Aims & Objectives

Sorig Treks & Tours is a health-cum educational enterprise whose aim is to generate an awareness and interest in Sowa Rigpa (pron. So-wah Rheek-pah), the ancient Buddhist knowledge of healing.  This rich medical heritage of mankind is relatively unknown and very much neglected despite its history of continuity of knowledge and practice for well over three millennia.  Sorig Treks & Tours is part of a private effort to create not just an interest and awareness in this ancient medical culture but also to make a difference in the healthcare of individuals.

A short one-day tour will be organized to various centers where this medical tradition is still taught and practiced. However, the major part of the tour will consist of trekking to various mountainous areas of the Himalayas for a field study of the medical plants used in the tradition.  Daily one to two hour lectures will be presented on a variety of subjects dealing with its history, concepts of disease, health, diagnosis, and treatment (diet, lifestyle, medicines, massage, moxibustion, herbal baths and so on).

Tour Leader and Lecturer

The tour and treks will be led by Mr. Tsewang J. Tsarong who has been involved with the preservation, propagation, and development of this medical culture for more than thirty years.  Educated in Tibet, India, and the U.S., Mr. Tsarong was the former director the dalai Lama’s Tibetan Medical & Astrological Institute in Dharamsala, India.  He is the author-cum-translator of Fundamentals of Tibetan Medicine, Handbook of Tibetan Drugs: Their Nomenclature, Composition, Use, and Dosage, and Tibetan Medicinal Plants.  He is presently working on the full translation and commentary on Shakyamuni Buddha’s Total Pacification of Disease, the oldest extant medical text of mankind.  Mr. Tsarong also did a stint of acting in Touchstone’s Kundun, directed by Martin Scorsese and produced by Walt Disney.

Fall Session 2005

The Fall Session will start from August 7th to August 14th, 2005.  The field trip will take place within the montane and sub-alpine zone (3000-4500m) of the surrounding hills of Manali, where over 30 fascinating medicinal plants of the tradition live and flourish.  The field trip will involve not only a study of individual plants (their identification, tastes, pharmacological action and use) but also their habitat and general ecosystem.  Kindly have your flights booked to Kulu Airport, Himachal Pradesh, via New Delhi and we’ll take over from there!

Spring Session 2006

The Spring Sesseion will start from Apjril 30th to May 6th, 2006.  The field trip will take place in the sub-montane zone (1000-2500m) in Sikkim. Kindly book your flights to Bagdogra Airport, Bagdogra, West Bengal, India via Kolkata and we’ll receive you  at the airport.

Fall Session in 2006

The Fall Session will take place in August, 2006.  The field trip will take place in the montane and sub-alpine zones of Bhutan.  Book flights directly to Paro Airport, Paro, Bhutan and we’ll receive you at the airport and take you directly to Gantey Palace Hotel, the only heritage hotel in Bhutan!

Items to Bring

Trekking boots, camera, films, torch, sleeping bad, note book, rucksack, sunglasses, sun-block and insect repellent spray or cream, light raincoat, warm socks, sweater, headgear, and warm jacket.

Registration

Since the group will be limited to only twenty persons, early registration and payment of fees is recommended.  Registration will be done on a first come first serve basis, so do register early to avoid last minute disappointments.

Fees

A total fee of USD 1500/- per head will be charged for the weekly tour and trek in India while charges for Bhutan will be USD1800/-.  The fees will include first class room and board within the respective areas, comfortable transportation to various destinations (including pickup and drop back from respective airports), study materials, and daily lectures.

Cancellation Policy: all cancellation requests must be made in writing.  No phone cancellations will be honored.  A full refund minus a USD50/- processing fee will be made for each request postmarked by July 15th, 2005.  All refunds will be issued after the conclusion of the session.  Please send your written request to the above individuals.
